Student Account and Record Information

The same laws that give parents and students access to and control over a child’s educational records during elementary and high school, transfer ownership of those records to the individual student at the college level.

According to FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act, also known as the Buckley Amendment), college students are considered responsible adults and are allowed to determine who will receive information about them. FERPA, along with the State of Minnesota Data Privacy Act, forms the backdrop for the Regents Policy on Access to Student Records. Based on those policies and laws, the student must grant permission to share his or her private information with others by completing a Student Information Release Authorization form.

Student Information Release Authorization

In accordance with Regent’s policy, the State of Minnesota Data Privacy Act, and the federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA), students wishing to release private account information to third parties (including a spouse, parents, grandparents, and other agencies) must complete a “Student Information Release Authorization”.

This form is also available at all Bursar Offices as well as the One Stop Student Services Centers.

We may not release student information to a third party without the student’s permission. A Student Information Release Authorization only allows release of information over the phone, in person, or via e-mail or written correspondence. It does not give access to online web information or online electronic billing and payment.

Separate arrangements must be made with other offices for other information to be released.
