Cashing Checks at the Bursar Offices

Students may cash checks at the Office of the Bursar based on the following information:

  • The student must be currently enrolled (registration status will be verified electronically)
  • The student must have a valid picture ID (the UCard is preferred but we will accept a valid Driver License or State-issued ID card)
  • The student must be in good standing with the university (not on our bad check list)
  • We do not cash any third party checks

***WE DO NOT CASH ANY THIRD PARTY CHECKS***

Personal or Non-University of Minnesota Checks

Student’s can cash these checks up to a dollar limit of $50.50 per day.

There is a $0.50 fee for each check cashed. The check must include the address and phone number of the person cashing the check.

NOTE: The $0.50 check-cashing fee is subject to change.

If a student has a Personal or Non-University of Minnesota check over $50 that they want to cash, we can apply the excess money (over the $50.50) to their student account as a payment. Any overpayments resulting in a credit balance would fall under the student finance policies regarding such credit balances.

University of Minnesota Checks

Students can cash University of Minnesota checks (i.e. Payroll checks, Credit Balance checks, Special Payment checks, etc.) There is no limit on the check amount on University of Minnesota checks. There is a $0.50 fee for each check cashed.

NOTE: The $0.50 check-cashing fee is subject to change.
